Fabrizio Romano reveals when potential bombshell Arsenal exit will be decided as Newcastle plan stunning move
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has detailed when Kieran Tierney will decide whether to leave Arsenal or stay with them after it emerged Newcastle United could sign the defender.
Tierney has been a big hit among Arsenal fans since moving to the Emirates from Celtic in August 2019. Over the first three years of his time with Arsenal, his influence on the team gradually increased. He impressed manager Mikel Arteta with his solid defending, dangerous crossing ability and leadership skills.
However, Tierney’s place in the Arsenal starting eleven has come under serious threat this season. Oleksandr Zinchenko is currently Arteta’s preferred left-back, forcing Tierney to settle for a spot on the bench. And the Scot cannot complain too much as Zinchenko has been great during Arsenal’s charge for the Premier League title.
A few days before the end of the January transfer window, Aston Villa were urged to move for Tierney. But this move never materialised.
Instead, Newcastle could cause a shock by capturing the full-back from Arsenal. On Monday, Football Insider claimed Newcastle are ‘closely monitoring’ Tierney’s situation. And they could swoop in for him as they are ‘in the market’ for a new left-back.
Tierney would be a fantastic signing for Eddie Howe. He represents a big upgrade on current options Dan Burn and Matt Targett.
And in his latest column for CaughtOffside, Romano has discussed when a final decision could be made on Tierney’s future, amid the Newcastle rumours.
“Tierney will decide his future at the end of the season, also Nuno Tavares on loan is another factor to consider. Arsenal want him to be 100 per cent focused on the second part of the season, they’re not in talks with any club now,” the journalist said.
Newcastle forced to wait on Kieran Tierney decision
It seems Newcastle will have to wait a few more months before finding out whether Tierney will push for a transfer away from north London.
If he asks the Gunners to leave, then Newcastle will likely be at the front of the queue to snap him up. But if Tierney opts to stay at Arsenal and battle Zinchenko for the left-back spot, then Newcastle will have to scout other options.
While Tierney is not currently in the Arsenal starting lineup, his departure would still be a significant loss for Arteta. The 25-year-old is a big voice in the Gunners dressing room.
Plus, Arsenal will need to have two quality players in each position if they are to continue fighting Manchester City for league titles in future seasons. Arteta has that right now at left-back. But if Tierney goes then a new player will need to be brought in.
Tavares will return to Arsenal once his Marseille loan ends in the summer, though he has been inconsistent in an Arsenal shirts so far.
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s Transfer Gossip includes a rumoured Arsenal target revealing his love for the club.
