Fabrizio Romano confirms Man City set to complete deal for England ace Guardiola will turn into a legend
Man City are applying the final touches to an agreement with an England ace Pep Guardiola can’t get enough of, and Fabrizio Romano has provided his signature “here we go” confirmation.
Man City were crowned Premier League champions for the fifth time in six seasons on Saturday evening. The latest success is their third in a row, making them just the second side to secure a three-peat in the Premier League era. Man Utd won back-to-back-to-back titles between 1999-01 and 2007-09.
Key to City’s ability to maintain their incredibly high standards is how they rejuvenate their squad with regularity.
Many new faces enter the club through the transfer market, though there are signs the club’s academy is starting to bear fruit.
Indeed, Phil Foden is already among the country’s best players and fellow academy graduates, Rico Lewis and Cole Palmer, have taken great strides forward this season.
Lewis’ rapid rise is part of the reason Guardiola was willing to loan Joao Cancelo out to Bayern Munich in January. Palmer, meanwhile, has racked up a healthy 22 appearances across all competitions.
Today’s update regards Lewis, with Fabrizio Romano revealing the versatile 18-year-old is poised to sign a long-term deal at the Etihad.
Indeed, Romano reported that while talks have been “advanced for months”, it’s only now that the finishing touches are being applied to the deal.
Man City are “closing in” on a full agreement which, per the reporter, is “set to be completed”.
It’s reiterated Guardiola is a huge fan is Lewis who he has deployed in a variety of roles this term. Aside from his customary right-back position, Lewis has also featured as an inverted full-back alongside Rodri in midfield on occasion and has been utilised on the left flank too.
Guardiola has previously compared Lewis to Germany legend Philipp Lahm who he managed at Bayern Munich. Lahm began his career as a full-back, though later transitioned into a classy holding midfielder.
“There are players who play for themselves really well, but he has the ability to make all the team play better,” Guardiola previously said of Lewis (via Sky Sports).
“He has this ability and it’s not easy to find it. He is our little Philipp Lahm.”
Romano gave a new Lewis deal his signature “here we go” confirmation and the future England international looks set to play a huge role in City’s line-up in the years to come.
England too could be a major beneficiary of Lewis honing his craft under Guardiola. Despite being just 18, Lewis has already featured for England’s Under-21s and it’s only a matter of time before he breaks into the senior set-up.
