F1 Singapore GP LIVE: Race result as Lando Norris wins ahead of Max Verstappen

Lando Norris produced a statement win over Max Verstappen in Singapore to strike another dent into his rival’s world championship lead.

The British driver survived two scrapes with the wall, but still led every lap under the lights of the Marina Bay circuit to take the chequered flag 20.9 seconds clear of Red Bull’s Verstappen.

Norris’ win – the most emphatic of his career so far – means he trails Verstappen by 52 points with 180 points still to play for over the remaining six rounds.

Oscar Piastri finished third, one place ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell with Charles Leclerc fifth for Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton started third but crossed the line a disappointing sixth.

Daniel Ricciardo in tears as F1 exit looms after Singapore Grand Prix

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:35 , Kieran Jackson

Daniel Ricciardo insists he is “at peace” with the prospect of Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix being his final race in F1 in emotional scenes after the race.

The 35-year-old Australian secured the fastest lap of the race at the end, stealing a point away from race winner Lando Norris, but finished back in 18th for RB.

Speculation is rife in the paddock that Red Bull reserve Liam Lawson is replacing Ricciardo for the final six races of the season, starting in Austin on 20 October.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Magnussen’s lap gets deleted (Lap 57/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:38 , Kieran Jackson

Magnussen must have gone off track as his time has been deleted - so Norris retains the fastest lap!

Biggest battle in the top-10 now is for P9, with Perez right behind Hulkenberg.

And Leclerc is just 1.2 seconds off Russell now in the battle for fourth!

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Kevin Magnussen sets new fastest lap! (Lap 55/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:33 , Kieran Jackson

And that extra point has gone from Lando Norris, as Magnussen sets the new fastest lap with those soft tyres.

Norris’ engineer: “Just chill out, bring it home.” Yeah, they’re not bringing him in...

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: George Russell taps the wall (Lap 53/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:32 , Kieran Jackson

Russell: “Just kissed the wall, rear right.”

Seems all fine though.

At the front, Lando Norris leads by 29 seconds to Max Verstappen - could he maybe pit late on to try and get the fastest lap? I imagine not worth the risk and, at the moment, Norris has the fastest lap extra point!

But Piastri will not catch Verstappen - he’s 18 seconds behind and is not making ground on the Red Bull!

Top-10: Norris, Verstappen, Piastri, Russell, Leclerc, Hamilton, Sainz, Alonso, Hulkenberg, Perez

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Kevin Magnussen pits (Lap 52/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:28 , Kieran Jackson

He’s plum-last now however!

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Norris taps the wall (Lap 47/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:22 , Kieran Jackson

Russell: “It’s like a sauna in here.” It’s getting tough now for the drivers!

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Piastri takes Russell now (Lap 46/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:20 , Kieran Jackson

In comes the Aussie then, and he comes out in fifth - on new hard tyres and just one second behind Lewis Hamilton, who came in about 25 laps ago!

So... how many places can Piastri make up? Can he get past Russell and Hamilton ahead of him, and maybe even Verstappen?

As you were then, with Norris 22 seconds ahead of Verstappen in second.

Piastri: “It’s getting very tricky now.”

Surely only a matter of time before McLaren get their man in?

Out in front, Lando Norris is 13 seconds clear of Piastri, who in turn is nine seconds ahead of Max Verstappen.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Max Verstappen fuming on team radio (Lap 32/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 13:57 , Kieran Jackson

“I just don’t get it, why did we let him undercut us by so far, it’s so stupid!”

That was Verstappen’s reaction to coming out behind Leclerc, but what he doesn’t know is that it’s not really for track position - given Leclerc hasn’t pitted!

So, current top-10: Norris, Piastri (not pitted), Verstappen, Leclerc (not pitted), Russell, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Sainz, Alonso, Hulkenberg

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Lando Norris pits (Lap 31/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 13:55 , Kieran Jackson

He comes back out in first place, three seconds ahead of his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri!

Verstappen, meanwhile, is 18 seconds behind Piastri.

When will the Aussie pit then? He’s the only one left of the original top-five yet to pit...

Verstappen comes out just behind Charles Leclerc in fourth, it was very tight on pit exit!

When will Lando respond then?

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Max Verstappen struggling with his tyres (Lap 28/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 13:50 , Kieran Jackson

Verstappen: “Rears are struggling now.”

Sunday 22 September 2024 13:48 , Kieran Jackson

He makes a move on Tsunoda but breaks too late! “Something is wrong with this car.”

Currently down in P10.

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Charles Leclerc frustrated (Lap 24/62)

Hamilton comes in for a quick stop - 2.4 secs - and drops from third to 13th as he switches to hards.

George Russell up to third for the time being then, 11 seconds behind Verstappen but just 0.9 secs ahead of Piastri behind.

As for Lando? 13.2 seconds to Verstappen. Jeez, that McLaren is rapid!

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: Alex Albon retires! (Lap 16/62)

Sunday 22 September 2024 13:32 , Kieran Jackson

How disappointing for Albon!

He retires his car, not sure what the issue is but he dropped back to plum last! It may well be overheating.

His Williams team-mate Franco Colapinto, meanwhile, is in P9 and is doing well to stay ahead of Sergio Perez!

The anatomy of Lando Norris on pole – and the seven times it’s gone wrong

Sunday 22 September 2024 12:32 , Kieran Jackson

It is now seven times that Norris has started an F1 race on pole – and seven times that he has failed to lead when starting lap two.

What has Norris been doing wrong? Are there repeated issues at the start line? We break down all seven of those pole position starts – dating back to 2021 – to highlight where Norris must improve if he is to start claiming consistent lights-to-flag victories with the minimum of fuss.

Will today be different?

“Naturally when you’re fighting for your first championship, when you know you’ve got the quickest car on the grid you know it’s yours to lose. Lando is a great driver.

“Max’s only opportunity is turn 1, then Lando will be at the distance. Every single year the P2 car has made a bad start. I’d love to see Max battle it out and Lewis and I can swing by!”

Why F1 drivers lose more weight at Singapore GP than any other race

Sunday 22 September 2024 11:23 , Kieran Jackson

Within a calendar which now stretches across 24 races, the Singapore Grand Prix – F1’s original night race, which first became a mainstay of the schedule in 2008 – remains the ultimate outlier in terms of conditions. And the ultimate challenge.

With humidity close to 90% and track temperatures around 40C (though it can feel even hotter in the cockpit), drivers lose 2-3kg in sweat alone.

For taller drivers, it can be as much as 4kg, which equates to 3-4% of their bodyweight.

More detail below:

Why F1 drivers lose more weight at Singapore GP than any other race

Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 career looks doomed again – and he can have no complaints

Sunday 22 September 2024 11:06 , Kieran Jackson

When handed a second chance in Formula One last summer, Daniel Ricciardo had his aspirations set higher than a paltry seat at Red Bull’s sister team. As he told The Independent, the effervescent Australian made no secret of his desire to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull, with 2025 a realistic target. Yet what matters in this sport – beyond a joyous expression and personality – is two-fold: the stopwatch and the standings.

Ricciardo, try as he might, has not been up to scratch on both. A crying shame, for his fans and fans of the sport. Heading into round 18 of the 2024 season in Singapore this weekend, the 35-year-old is 14th in the championship standings but, more significantly, languishes 10 points behind his teammate Yuki Tsunoda.

And so we arrive to now, with Ricciardo’s F1 future on the verge of disintegration once again.

“Ah man, qualifying has been a disaster for me all year long. I’ve been working and working, all of a sudden it came alive in qualifying for the first time in qualifying. I think there was a tiny bit more left in the car, but I’m grateful for it.

Could this be Daniel Ricciardo’s final F1 race?

Sunday 22 September 2024 10:28 , Kieran Jackson

Daniel Ricciardo admits his future in Formula One is shrouded in uncertainty ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

Speculation is rife that a decision on RB’s 2025 drivers is expected in the next few weeks – due to a clause in Liam Lawson’s contract – and Ricciardo did not dismiss the rumours out of hand.

“I know how it is and how it works, and I knew there was always going to be some dates and deadlines this year, whether it was the summer break or now post-Singapore, so post-Singapore is the next one,” he told Sky Sports F1.

“Honestly, it’s still, so many things are up in the air. Let’s see how the weekend goes. Obviously, I’m going to give it all I can, as I have. There’s always something to fight for. We’ll see what happens. Try to get the thing on the podium, that’s my plan.”

“So, yeah, I’ve got nothing on them and nothing compared to them.

“So I find it cool, you know, that I’m here and I’m amongst them and yeah, trying to fight against them. I think that’s pretty awesome in my regard.”

Lewis Hamilton encourages Max Verstappen to ignore FIA’s orders in Singapore

Saturday 21 September 2024 18:10 , Kieran Jackson

Lewis Hamilton has urged Max Verstappen to snub his community service order – after his Dutch rival took on Formula One’s rulemakers by refusing to answer questions in the FIA’s press conference for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.

Lando Norris kept his cool in the heat and humidity of the Marina Bay circuit to put his McLaren on pole position. He will be joined on the front row by Verstappen, who he trails by 59 points, with Hamilton third.

An extraordinary press conference, featuring Norris, Verstappen and Hamilton, then followed, which the triple world champion effectively boycotted, 24 hours after he was sanctioned by F1’s governing boy for swearing in Thursday’s media call.

Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 career looks doomed again – and he can have no complaints

Saturday 21 September 2024 13:54 , Kieran Jackson

When handed a second chance in Formula One last summer, Daniel Ricciardo had his aspirations set higher than a paltry seat at Red Bull’s sister team. As he told The Independent, the effervescent Australian made no secret of his desire to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull, with 2025 a realistic target. Yet what matters in this sport – beyond a joyous expression and personality – is two-fold: the stopwatch and the standings.

ICYMI: Max Verstappen receives bizarre penalty after swearing at F1 press conference

Saturday 21 September 2024 13:11 , Kieran Jackson

Max Verstappen has been told to “accomplish some work of public interest” in an odd ruling by the stewards after swearing during Thursday’s FIA press conference in Singapore.

The Red Bull driver, who leads this year’s world championship by 59 points to Lando Norris, has not won in seven races and struggled last week in Azerbaijan.

When asked about his car in Baku, Verstappen replied that he knew “the car was f*****” and was warned about his language by the moderator.

After being called to see the stewards on Friday, with a meeting lasting around 15 minutes, the decision reached by the stewards was an “obligation to accomplish some work of public interest.”

Lewis Hamilton calls out FIA boss for ‘racial element’ over comments on swearing and rappers

Saturday 21 September 2024 12:57 , Kieran Jackson

Lewis Hamilton has called out FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem for a comment referring to rappers when discussing the broadcast of swearing in Formula One races – saying they had a “racial element” to them.

Ben Sulayem, head of F1’s governing body, says he has asked Formula 1 to limit the amount of swearing – usually from drivers over team radio – on TV coverage of races. Swear words are currently bleeped out before being broadcast.

The 62-year-old Emirati executive said: “We have to differentiate between our sport – motorsport – and rap music. We’re not rappers, you know. They say the F-word how many times per minute? We are not on that. That’s them and we are [us].”

F1 Singapore Grand Prix LIVE: McLaren boss Zak Brown...

Friday 20 September 2024 13:50 , Kieran Jackson

“Anything we can do to help Lando, we’ll do,” he said. “We don’t want to compromise Oscar’s results. Race-by-race basis, two great drivers who are capable of winning races.”

On whether McLaren would swap drivers at the front: “Handing off a race win is a pretty difficult thing to do. We’ll take it one race at a time, it’s a pretty big ask of a grand prix driver. Lando wants to win the championship the right way, we still have a lot of racing to go. No one wants to inherit a win that way.

“Oscar is 30 or so points behind Lando, it will require some awesome weekends. You’re not looking at a driver too far back from Lando, that’s why we’ve got to take it one race at a time.”
