N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Voters in Chad head to the polls on Sunday for a presidential election in which Idriss Deby is widely expected to extend his three-decade rule despite growing signs of popular discontent and opposition criticism over his handling of oil wealth. Deby, 68, is one of Africa's longest-serving leaders and an ally of Western powers in the fight against Islamist militants in West and Central Africa. Deby has relied on a firm grip over state institutions and one of the region's most capable militaries to maintain power.
Benin votes on Sunday in a presidential election following a week of deadly protests against the incumbent Patrice Talon, who is heavily favoured to win a second term. Talon, a multi-millionaire cotton magnate who touts strong economic growth under his leadership, is accused by his opponents of undermining Benin's standing as one of West Africa's most stable democracies. "The events of these last days scare me," said Christophe Dossou, a student.

World number two Justin Thomas was the pick of some as the man to beat halfway through the Masters, and a strong start to the third round on Saturday seemed to justify those who favored him. Thomas's round came apart spectacularly with a triple-bogey at the par-five 13th, a gruesome butchering that all but ended his chances at Augusta National. He botched his third shot into the Rae's Creek tributary, and compounded his misery by three-putting, one of several players to misjudge the speed on that green after rain had slowed it.

Hideki Matsuyama’s four-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round of the Masters is a breakthrough moment for Japan, which became the 17th nation to see one of its players hold a lead after any round at Augusta National. It was 10 years ago when Matsuyama became the first Asia-Pacific Amateur champion to make the cut and be the low amateur at the Masters.
Facebook has expanded into new territory… this time, converting part of its Menlo Park headquarters into a vaccination site. Many people stayed six feet apart Saturday, as they lined up to be inoculated against COVID-19. "We're expecting to do about 1,200 every weekend."Luisa Buada is the CEO of California’s Ravenswood Family Health Network - which teamed up with Facebook for this initiative."It's so important that we get rid of the COVID virus so people can go back to a normal life."Local resident Jermaine King jumped at the chance to be vaccinated: “It’s a sense of relief. Right now I’ve got a close friend in southern California in the ICU with COVID. And he’s the same age of me. So to be able to know that I’m protecting myself and protecting others by getting the vaccine, I think it’s pretty awesome. It feels good.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control Prevention said, as of Friday morning, more than 178 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered across the country. Officials are urging Americans to get a shot as soon as possible… in part, to prevent new variants of COVID-19 from spreading. The highly contagious variant - first discovered in the UK - has become the most common version of the virus in the U.S. as cases continue to climb. That’s according to CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky - who said this week, daily cases of the virus were up 2.3% from the previous seven-day average.
Former President Donald Trump sought to position himself as the Republican Party kingmaker on Saturday, telling party donors he will help them win seats in 2022 congressional elections but shed no new light on whether he will seek a second term in 2024. Trump played host to a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago Club for Republican National Committee donors who are spending the weekend charting the future course of the party in Palm Beach, Florida. "We are gathered tonight to talk about the future of the Republican Party - and what we must do to set our candidates on a course to victory," Trump said, according to a prepared text of his speech to the group seen by Reuters.
Eighty-seven years after a Canadian recorded a hole-in-one in the very first Masters, Corey Conners matched the feat during the third round at Augusta National on Saturday. The effort, the sixth ever ace at the sixth hole in the Masters, helped set up Conners for a possible chance of becoming the second player from north of the border to clinch a Green Jacket, after Mike Weir in 2003. Weir was in the gallery on Saturday proudly wearing his jacket after missing the cut the previous day.
Tom Brady called in to Augusta National to give Tony Finau some encouragement.
One day before it holds presidential and congressional elections, Peru on Saturday marked a second daily record death rate from the coronavirus pandemic that is engulfing the country anew. The health ministry said 384 deaths had been recorded, taking the total death toll to 54,669, as healthcare workers battle a shortage of medical oxygen and saturated hospitals, and the government struggles to secure sufficient vaccination supplies. On Wednesday, Peru marked its first record number of dead - 314 - the worst since the pandemic hit the country with a first wave in March 2020.
