Explosion in Santiago Leads to Three-Alarm Fire

An explosion in the industrial Pudahuel sector of Santiago, Chile, on Monday afternoon, March 2, caused a three-alarm fire and a thick column of smoke visible from multiple vantage points across the capital city, local media reported.

The explosion occurred just after 1 pm at the Bodegas San Francisco, located at the intersection of Puerto Madero and Puerto Santiago streets, Chile’s National Emergency Office (ONEMI) said

Luis Tapia recorded this video two blocks away from the fire in Pudahuel. Firefighters from several different departments responded to the three-alarm fire.

Government spokeswoman Karla Rubilar warned that explosive elements may be within the fire’s reach. Santiago residents were encouraged to keep their windows closed and to not expose themselves to smoke until officials make a statement about potential toxicity.
