Tokyo 2021: Winningest countries in Summer Olympic history

The Summer Olympic Games have taken place every four years since 1896 (except for 1916, 1940 and 1944), with the tradition of giving out gold, silver and bronze medals starting in 1904. While the Games are constantly evolving throughout the years, many of the same countries have remained dominant since the game's inception.
