A troubled West Ham signing may be a one and done in the Premier League, with a report claiming a return to the country he was bought from is on the cards.

The Hammers spent big last summer when forking out sizeable fees for the likes of Nayef Aguerd, Lucas Paqueta and Gianluca Scamacca. The lack of impact from many of the new recruits in the early going hampered West Ham’s season, though with Premier League safety assured and a European final on the horizon, the doom and gloom has been lifted.

However, one player who might not be offered a second season to prove his worth is striker Scamacca.

The 24-year-old was a £30.5m (prior to add-ons) signing from Sassuolo. Much was expected of the bullocking Italy international, though little has been delivered.

Indeed, Scamacca has notched just eight goals and provided zero assists across his 27 appearances in all competitions this term. Even before the knee injury that curtailed his season, Scamacca had been dropped in favour of Michail Antonio.

Scamacca won’t play for West Ham again this season through injury and per Gazzetta dello Sport, might not in subsequent years either.

That’s because a move to Serie A heavyweight AC Milan is being floated. Milan showed strong interest in Scamacca during his Sassuolo days and their interest has not waned despite a dubious season in England.

Indeed, the report states Scamacca is not in future plans at West Ham and Milan are ‘on pole’ for a summer swoop.

Milan are seeking an out-and-out number nine given they’ll not be able to rely on the ageing Olivier Giroud for much longer.

Scamacca would fit the billing and a loan deal with an option to buy is floated in the piece. From the player’s perspective, it’s claimed Scamacca would ‘more than willingly’ accept the move.

Milan are understood to keen on bringing Scamacca back to Italy and it’s suggested West Ham too are receptive to a premature exit.

Whether it’s an option or obligation to buy that’s included and at what price point will depend on whether Milan secure qualification for next year’s Champions League.

Despite making it all the way to the semi-finals this season, they currently lay fifth in Serie A, one point behind Lazio who have a game in hand.

Before any move is launched, Milan also want assurances over Scamacca’s recovery from the knee injury that shortened his season.

Scamacca underwent surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee and was ruled out for ‘two to three months’ back in mid-April.
