Robbie Savage has defended the fee Tottenham will likely pay for Brennan Johnson if they can get the deal over the line in the final days of the summer transfer window.
The Nottingham Forest forward has been valued at £50m by the east Midlands club with Brentford already seeing a £43m bid for Johnson turned down.
Forest seem determined to hold out for £50m for the Wales international with Johnson contributing eight goals and three assists in 41 Premier League appearances for Steve Cooper’s side.
The Daily Telegraph have reported that sources ‘expect Tottenham to make an offer on Thursday, with the player keen on a move to north London’ but the ‘scale of Tottenham’s late business may be impacted by how many players they can offload before the window shuts’.
£50m may seem a lot of money for a player only in his second full season at Premier League level but Savage thinks it will be money well spent.
When asked if £50m is a lot of money and whether he is good enough for Spurs, Savage said exclusively to Football365 on behalf of Planet Sport Bet: “So Spurs linked with Brennan Johnson, the young Welshman doing ever so well, he’s got pace in transition, he’s fantastic.
“Will he fit into Spurs’ style of play? The answer to that is yes, 41 appearances in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest, just eight goals and three assists.
“Brennan Johnson for me would suit one of those wide positions, I know they’ve got Son, they’ve got Richarlison as a nine and they’ve got Kulusevski out on the right. I think Brennan Johnson can be a huge asset with Maddison sitting a little bit deeper threading balls through.
“I think for £50m they are buying a fantastic, young player. He’s got bags of potential, he’s got pace and I think at £50m Brennan Johnson will be a real good signing for Spurs.”
Nottingham Forest boss Cooper will be hoping to hold onto one of his best players as the transfer window draws to a close and he issued an update of sorts in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.
Cooper said: “If something’s going to happen then it’s coming to that time.
“We shall see. In terms of Brennan there’s no official news, we just have to carry on as normal. The boys are in for training and we’ll treat it as best we can like a normal day.”
