Exclusive: Home and Away star Sophie Dillman discusses Ziggy and Dean's split

From Digital Spy

Home and Away spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Home and Away star Sophie Dillman has spoken to Digital Spy about Ziggy Astoni's sad split from Dean Thompson.

This week's episodes on Channel 5 see Ziggy decide that she can no longer stay with Dean after hearing his confession over Ross Nixon's murder.

Dean has decided to confide in Ziggy about how Colby Thorne killed Ross at the start of last year. Dean became involved in the cover-up by helping to bury his body.

Sophie and Patrick O'Connor – who plays Dean – are a couple in real life, but viewers will now have to see how their characters cope apart.

Asked how she first reacted to the break-up storyline, Sophie told Digital Spy: "Shocked! I was really shocked, but then I thought about it for a few more minutes and thought: 'Well, we live in Summer Bay!'

"We did get a heads-up from the writers, which is good as it ties into all of the stuff with Colby and Ross, and Willow and Amber. It's good to know in those heightened storylines so you can map what's happening, where it's happening and do the best job you can.

"I don't think Ziggy and Dean's fans will react well, honestly! But everything happens for a reason so it will be okay!"

Quizzed on whether she can understand Ziggy's reaction to the Ross secret, Sophie continued: "Yes, I can. I mean sure, love is love and love conquers all, but it's very hard to walk a mile in Dean's shoes.

"I tried my best to think about how I would react in those situations, but I think my moral compass would overtake that, because really, if I was put in that situation, I'd know that I deserve better than to be with someone who feels that they can do that to another person, whoever that person is."

Sophie confirmed that the arrival of Dean's ex-lover Amber Simmons and their son Jai hasn't helped matters.

She explained: "I think Ziggy has a big insecurity about other women, because her marriage to Brody ended in a big cheating scandal. So Amber certainly doesn't help the situation, and Amber doesn't want to.

"Amber wants Ziggy out of the picture so that she can hopefully have her happily ever after. From her perspective, I can understand that as she wants a family and a father for Jai and a partner for herself, but it certainly doesn't help Ziggy in her insecurities. Above all that though, Ziggy wants Dean to be happy, and Jai makes him happy."

On whether Ziggy and Dean can ever reunite, Sophie laughed: "Oh we have everything crossed!"

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5, with first look screenings at 6.30pm on 5STAR.
