Hollyoaks star Jessica Fox has addressed fan fears that the soap's ambitious flashforward storyline will be damaged by the coronavirus-enforced production shutdown, saying that she has faith that the show's bosses "will pull it out of the bag".
Jessica, who plays Nancy Osborne, spoke exclusively to Digital Spy about the story, which was set up by last December's special flashforward episode featuring scenes set on December 31, 2020.
Although the soap's writers now have a lot less time to progress the various story strands to the point they need to be at by the end of this year to match up with the flashforward episode, the actress is sure that there is still time to join those dots.
"I think the flashforward is now going to have to be a bit more of a fastforward because we've now got less time to film the journey that leads up to it," she said. "But I know that all of the ideas are there. All of the dots are there waiting to be connected.
"I'm sure that Hollyoaks will pull it out of the bag and we'll all be watching it saying: 'Ah, it all makes sense now!'"
The actress added that she finds fan speculation over who is in that body bag we caught a glimpse of in the flashforward episode "funny and terrifying in equal measure", saying: "It was not specified how big the person in that body bag is, so who knows? But I cannot wait to find out."
A big element of the flashforward episode was the County Lines drug storyline, which has been playing out throughout this year and has seen a number of the soap's teenage characters becoming embroiled in transporting drugs for dealer Jordan Price (Connor Calland).
One character who will become more involved in this leading up to New Year's Eve is Nancy's nephew Charlie Dean (Charlie Behan) and Jessica revealed that Nancy will struggle to see what Charlie is up to, particularly following the tragic suicide of her fiancé Kyle Kelly (Adam Rickitt) last week.
"Nancy is going to be a bit preoccupied, dealing with her own grief and trying to figure out how she's going to put one foot in front of the other," she explained. "Charlie is being manipulated so well by Jordan. I think him finding comfort, support and attention from the other sources will ultimately lead him down that very dark and scary path – and leave Nancy unable to see it."
With filming on Hollyoaks planned to recommence in July, there is hopefully still time for the soap to get back on track with the storyline and film all of the most important moments needed to build up to that New Year's Eve episode.
Hollyoaks airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm. Wednesdays through Fridays on E4 will feature classic episodes called Hollyoaks Favourites to compensate for the soap suspending filming.
