Exclusive: Henry Golding talks about why Crazy Rich Asians 2 has been delayed

From Digital Spy

Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding has revealed why the sequel is taking longer than expected to arrive.

Back in 2019, it was hoped that the sequel would shoot back-to-back with the third movie this year, depending on the schedules of the actors involved. However, that doesn't seem to be the case any more.

Talking to Digital Spy for the release of his new movie Monsoon, Golding explained that he spoke recently to director Jon Chu and they're "trying to crack the script right now" for the sequel.

"They've got the two books that Kevin Kwan wrote still to come and they're trying to find an angle to convert those from page to script to film," he said.

"It's a very complicated process because, visually, sometimes a novel doesn't make as much sense as it would on the screen in a direct adaptation. So you have to really change it up to make it interesting.

"The other issue is that we've got the first one to compete with, everybody has a very high expectation. It's not going to be as easy as the first one. It's still a work in progress, for sure."

If there's a bonus to be taken from the delay for Crazy Rich Asians 2, however frustrating, then it's that they're not just rushing into the follow-up to capitalise on the huge success for the first movie.

The first movie took almost $240 million worldwide and gained critical acclaim, making it one of the biggest rom-coms of recent years.

It also made a Hollywood star out of Golding with him going on to appear in the likes of Last Christmas, A Simple Favour and Monsoon. The roles since Crazy Rich Asians have been his attempt to avoid being stereotyped.

"We've tried to cover the gambit, and to really find my groove – and also not to be kind of pigeonholed. That's the concern when you're in a big, breakout romcom. Are you going to be that guy, Prince Charming, for the entire time?," he explained.

"So I think I identified pretty early on that I wanted to create a block of work with a range. And I think that helped with the choices for sure."

Monsoon is out in UK cinemas and on digital platforms on September 25.
