Harley Quinn season 2 spoilers follow.

Producer Patrick Schumacker has delved into the reasons behind killing off Penguin in Harley Quinn season 2.

In the opening episode, the chaotic anti-heroine escaped from an icy prison – put together by Mr Freeze, Riddler, Two-Face, Penguin and Bane – and plunged her broken baseball bat deep into Oswald Cobblepot's throat.

This was the end of the line for one of Batman's biggest villains, but where did such a dramatic decision come from?

In Digital Spy's exclusive chat with Schumacker, he revealed: "To be honest, we had such an embarrassment of riches with regards to the villain characters in the show. We needed a sacrificial lamb.

"We needed someone to help us make Harley make that statement, that she really meant bigness on the sort of revenge tour that she's going on in the season.

"He felt like the best target, just in terms of the story that we wanted to tell. We didn't need the Penguin involved in stories down the road for this season. We had to pick one. It was a bit of a 'pick your poison' moment. So, yeah, that's where we landed."

The producer went on to label it a "pragmatic decision", but also warned that other characters could "perish" later on this season.

"There's an episode that aired today in the States that has another character – a significant character – die. So, you know, it happens in the show, but the Penguin was the first," he teased.

Harley Quinn will air soon on E4 in the UK. US viewers can watch seasons 1 and 2 on the DC Universe app.
