Dare Me spoilers for season 1 follow.

Dare Me star Willa Fitzgerald has opened up about the "intoxicating" relationship between Colette and Addy in a chat with Digital Spy.

The USA Network's cheerleader drama is unlike many teen dramas in its exploration of dark themes including obsession and murder, all leading up to a brutal season one finale.

In it, viewers learned that Coach Colette French (Fitzgerald), her husband Matt French (Rob Heaps) and cheerleading protege Addy Hanlon (Herizen Guardiola) were all at Will Mosley's (Zach Roerig) flat in the immediate aftermath of his murder.

Hanlon is left with many questions as well as the potential to be implicated in Will's death – as questions swirl over exactly how the man died after Colette cut off their affair.

When we recently chatted to Willa Fitzgerald, she offered some insight on why Colette brought Addy into her inner-circle beyond the bounds of any teacher-student relationship.

"I think that Addy is Colette's kryptonite," she told us. "Addy represents so much that Colette craves – youth, possibility, freedom. Their relationship is unlike any she has ever experienced precisely because there is no template for it – she is more than just a coach and more than a friend and more than a mentor. There is something in all that grey space that is entirely intoxicating."

The actress continued: "The idea of control and domination is not what I see as central to their relationship. I think for both of them there is an intoxicating sense of confusion and possibility.

"I think there is the very real slide into a younger way of seeing the world that happens for Colette when she is around Hanlon. Being with someone in such a different stage in her life gives Colette a new way of seeing her own world.

"I think they are both in love with the illicit and the unknown. I think they both are driven by the desire to feel more alive. Colette sees in Addy an utter escape from the life she has built for herself, a life which feels increasingly claustrophobic.

"However, obviously, her relationship with Addy eventually turns to one of claustrophobia as well."

Fitzgerald also explained that, "for better or worse", Addy has become Colette's "only confidant" because she has become "a largely isolated character".

As for what is to come in the second season, Fitzgerald hinted that the CCTV footage of Addy and Colette leaving Will's flat "will certainly come into play".

Dare Me airs on the USA Network.
