Casualty spoilers follow.
The soap returns this Saturday (January 2) with an episode dedicated to showing just how stressful the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been on the staff, and we wonder if a recently rekindled relationship could carry on under such circumstances — especially since Connie will be hugely affected by a death that we'll see on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Connie actress Amanda Mealing talked about her character's potential future, stating: "You know what they are like – they are on/off all the time. He is always there but Connie can't allow herself to have anything good in her life.
"After the COVID episode, she feels that she can't be having a good time and living the high life after what she sees as her failing. She takes the death of one of the team personally. She takes personal responsibility for it and it weighs on her heavily.
"But then Jacob is around, he is gorgeous and it gets complicated as ever. Nothing is ever straightforward or simple with those two.
"Charles [Venn] and I fought really, really hard to get Jacob and Connie back together – relentlessly. I don't know what the resistance is. If Charles and I had our way, we would see the white dress and everyone would be buying hats.
"But then I also think Connie could be incapable of happiness. She sabotages everything that is good. It's like she won't allow herself [to be happy] – I think she needs serious therapy. That could be a good ongoing think, you know. I think Connie and Jacob will always be on and off though."
Amanda definitely has a point, but wouldn't a Connie and Jacob happily ever after be lovely? But then again, this is soapland...
