Ex-Tottenham man gives two reasons why Chelsea’s ‘crazy’ appointment of Pochettino ‘won’t work’
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara has explained why he does not think Mauricio Pochettino is the “right man” for Chelsea.
The Blues have been searching for a new permanent manager since Graham Potter was sacked at the start of last month.
Frank Lampard has been in charge on an interim basis and under him, Chelsea have lost six games in a row across all competitions.
Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique were initially in the running to join Chelsea but Pochettino has since emerged as the frontrunner to take over at Stamford Bridge.
The former Spurs head coach has been out of work since leaving PSG at the end of last season. He is adored by Tottenham’s faithful after he guided them to their first Champions League final.
Pochettino has a major job on his hands at Chelsea as they are currently 12th in the table. He will be expected to eventually turn them into a team that consistently battles for the Premier League title.
O’Hara has warned Pochettino that Chelsea’s “fans will turn on him really quickly” and the club’s players “won’t be up for his style of football”.
“I think it’s crazy that Mauricio Pochettino could be going to Chelsea,” O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport.
“I don’t think it’s going to work – because he’s a Spurs man. The Chelsea fans will turn on him really quickly if it doesn’t go well, and he’s got to get the tune out of that group of players who, in my opinion, are soft.
“Those players won’t be up for the style of football that he wants to play either. I think Chelsea will be miles off it again next season, and I don’t think Pochettino is the right man for them.”

O’Hara is still “gutted” about Pochettino joining Chelsea and it is “typical Daniel Levy” that the Argentinian has been allowed to move to Tottenham’s rivals.
“We said it was a bit of a no-lose situation for Frank Lampard returning to Chelsea, but they’re losing every week and can’t score a goal,” O’Hara added.
“The club suddenly looks a bit broken – they’ve lost their identity and their DNA. They brought Lampard in to try and bring some of it back, and it just hasn’t happened. Tactically, they’re still miles off it. Chelsea are a poisoned chalice at the moment – they are on their knees.
“I’m a bit gutted about Pochettino joining them. It felt like everything was building up for him to come back to Tottenham, the club had been waiting and I feel like he would have wanted the job.
“I just felt like it was all coming together to bring him back, but the club just didn’t get it done – it’s just typical Daniel Levy isn’t it! That was the appointment that would have got the fans back onside, if Levy had given him some money and said, ‘right, let’s have another go at this’, and you’re going to let him go to Chelsea? It’s ridiculous.”
