What We Do in the Shadows season 2 spoilers follow.
What We Do in the Shadows season two managed to somehow be even better than the first season, ending on a huge cliffhanger in the process.
Based on the movie of the same name, the mockmentary follows vampire roommates Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and Colin Robinson as they – and Nandor's familiar Guillermo – go about their day-to-day life in Staten Island.
Season three has already been confirmed by FX after strong ratings, so we know that our favourite vampires will be back, but their lives are likely to be changed forever by the events of the season two finale.
Before we go into those events though, major spoilers are ahead, so look away now if you're not caught up yet.
What We Do in the Shadows season 3: How does season 2 finale set it up?
Throughout the season, we saw Guillermo get increasingly fed up with Nandor's unwillingness to turn him into a vampire, despite the fact Guillermo was saving his life on a regular basis.
Unknown to the vampires, Guillermo has been killing vampire assassins sent to the house and it turns out he's quite good at it, likely due to the fact he's a descendant of Van Helsing.
At the start of the finale, Guillermo has left the Staten Island house for good, but Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja don't care as they've been invited to the Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires, a prestigious vampire event.
Little do they realise that it's actually a trap set for them by the Vampiric Council who sentence Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and Colin Robinson for killing Baron Afanas in the first season.
Guillermo realises it's a trap and heads to the theatre to save them, resulting in him killing pretty much every vampire there and revealing his vampire-killing skills to Nandor and the others.
The Vampiric Council will likely be out for revenge in the third season, which will also have to deal with how the vampires deal with Guillermo being a bad-ass vampire hunter.
Series creator Jemaine Clement didn't give any hints as to what to expect in season three, mainly because he won't be involved in the writers' room this time around so doesn't have to deal with the huge cliffhanger.
"I'm leaving them with this big problem to work out. I think it's a good idea to end on a big cliffhanger, we did the same thing last season. Now they can figure out how to get out of this big mess," he explained.
It's unlikely that the show will go as dark as Nandor killing Guillermo, but perhaps he'll finally make good on his promise to turn him into a vampire, which could make him an even deadlier vampire hunter.
Equally, season three just won't really deal with the revelation and just stick with the formula that's served the show so well up to now.
What We Do in the Shadows season 3 episodes and release date
The confirmation of season three didn't come with any release date information and in a 'normal' year, we'd say you could expect it to start in April 2021.
However, with filming affected everywhere, it's unclear whether the show can stick to its usual filming schedule. Season two filmed from October-December 2019 ahead of the season's premiere on April 15, 2020.
So if filming does start on season three by the end of this year, it could well be that season three airs on Hulu on FX in the US and BBC Two in the UK around April 2021. But we won't know for sure until filming plans are confirmed.
As for the amount of episodes, both seasons have been ten episodes long, so we can expect season three to stick to the same amount.
What We Do in the Shadows season 3 cast: Who's coming back?
There's a lot of deaths in the show, but fortunately none of the main characters are affected, so we can expect all of them to return.
So that's Kayvan Novak as Nandor, Matt Berry as Laszlo, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja, Harvey Guillén as Guillermo and Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson.
Potential returns include Craig Robinson as Claude, the leader of an amateur vampire hunting group, Mark Hamill as Jim the Vampire who still holds a grudge against Laszlo, Haley Joel Osment as Topher, now a zombie working for necromancer Wallace (Benedict Wong).
If the Vampiric Council has a bigger role to play in season three, then we could also see the likes of Tilda Swinton, Evan Rachel Wood, Danny Trejo and Wesley Snipes, who all played members of the council in the first season.
What We Do in the Shadows season 3 trailer: Any new footage?
Unfortunately, it hasn't even started filming yet, so we can't expect to see any footage from season three until early 2021 – that is, if the show starts production later this year.
What We Do in the Shadows airs on FX in the US and BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
