Everything We Know about ‘Shōgun’ Season 2Disney+

The FX series Shōgun is already breaking Emmys records, and the main ceremony hasn't even started yet. At the Creative Arts Emmys on September 7 and 8, the show took home a whopping 14 awards, which is the most any single show has ever won in a day. And when the main, televised ceremony happens on September 15, there will surely be even more. And thank god! This show is amazing.

But you might also be wondering why the show is the "Drama Series" category when it was supposed to be a limited series. Well, that's partially because if a show gets renewed for a second season, it's not technically a limited series. Did you catch that great news? Shōgun was renewed for more seasons! Here's what we know about season 2.

The show has been renewed, technically.

FX announced it back in May! But the wording of the announcement was really interesting. The network said they are "working to extend the critically acclaimed global hit drama Shōgun, likely to yield two additional seasons." That's not quite as specific as, "Shōgun will return for season 2." My guess is they worded it this way because they already covered everything in the book by James Clavell that the show is based on, so the next season might look more like a spin-off or focus on other characters. I'm purely speculating, but I think they want to leave their options open.

What would it be about?

Here's what star Hiroyuki Sanada told Deadline when asked how they would continue the show without any more book material: "So, we don’t have any novels anymore, but it means for the writers a kind of freedom. We have history. We have real models, and we know what happened. So many episodes are there in the history. So, I hope the writers will enjoy that freedom. These kind of things are already in our DNA, I believe. So, with respect for [Clavell], his style, they create original stories freely. I’m so curious, and I cannot wait to read the first draft from them." I, also, cannot wait to see what they come up with!

When would it premiere?

The bad news is that it's going to take a while. Like, a long while. Sanada said in that same interview with Deadline that the writers' room had been formed and they were hoping to. head into production "next summer," which means it could be, like, a year after that before we see any footage. It'll be a long time until we get any new episodes.

Who's returning?

Great question! Because we don't know what the plot will be, we really have no idea!
