The Magicians season 6: Everything you need to know

The Magicians spoilers follow.

The Magicians first cast its spell on us way back in December 2015 and we've been under its spell ever since.

But after five seasons, Syfy decided to cancel the series in April 2020, much to the dismay of its die-hard fans.

"It played out kind of the way it's played out almost every season," co-creator John McNamara told TVInsider.

"With the exception of season four into season five, we never knew whether or not we were going to get picked up. It was always a discussion—never really about the creative—about the financials and you always know, with any show, that there's this kind of fine line between what it brings in and what it costs.

Co-creator Sera Gamble said: "And as the creators of the show, we understand that. We had the sense going into this season that Syfy, in particular as our first platform, was kind of hitting the point of, 'The cup is full and there's no more room.'"

McNamara added: "It's not going to necessarily expand in terms of revenue, it's not necessarily going to contract in terms of revenue, but it is going to cost more."

So could The Magicians be saved by another network or streaming service?

Here's everything you need to know.

Fans had hoped that a streaming service like Netflix would come along and save The Magicians from cancellation, but 18 months on from Syfy pulling the plug, there is no good news and it looks increasingly unlikely that magical series will return.

Syfy's statement at the time of cancellation sounded pretty final:

"The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons," the network said in a statement (via Variety). "As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever."

If the show were to - magically - return, hopefully all the main cast members would, too, including:

• Stella Maeve as Julia Wicker
• Olivia Taylor Dudley as Alice Quinn
• Hale Appleman as Eliot Waugh
• Arjun Gupta as William "Penny" Adiyodi
• Summer Bishil as Margo Hanson
• Rick Worthy as Henry Fogg
• Jade Tailor as Kady Orloff-Diaz
• Brittany Curran as Fen
• Trevor Einhorn as Josh Hoberman

However, many of the actors have moved onto new projects, including Stella Maeve, who is in pre-production on a new drama about cult leader Charles Manson's female devotees; Rick Worthy, who is now in Station 19; and Brittany Curran, who stars in the sci-fi series FraXtur.

In 2019, Stella Maeve was asked about her favourite memory of filming the series (via Showbiz Junkies).

"I can’t think of my all-time favourite. I’m sure it will have something to do with Jason (Ralph, who played Quentin) and making me laugh. You know, in season one he convinced me that he was wearing a wig the whole time. We’re shooting the last episode of the season and I went to touch it. He did this trick where he moved his hair. You know when you can move your skin? And I was like, ‘Oh my god, it’s a wig.’ And it wasn’t. That was earth-shattering for me. I was like, ‘Whoa, everything I thought I knew I didn’t'."

Following the death of Jason Ralph's protagonist in season four, the show had been forced to venture into whole new territory.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Sera Gamble discussed the impact of his death on the show moving forward: "It's not that Quentin's story is done on The Magicians. It is that Jason Ralph is no longer a series regular on the show, and Quentin Coldwater is dead on the show, and the story moving forward is about the aftermath of that...

"Jason has left the show, and Quentin is dead, and a lot of season five is about what happens next, just as when somebody dies in our lives, the next season of our life is about what happens."

Syfy has pretty much run out of storylines to adapt from the novels, so the source material is no longer useful when it comes to predicting what future seasons would have entailed.

Unfortunately, because the show has been cancelled, there will be no trailer for season six (and no season six, either).

The Magicians season 1 to 5 are available to watch on Prime Video.
