Between the cast and the release date, here's what to know about the Dakota Johnson-led 'Spider-Man' spinoff
Our Spidey senses are starting to tingle again!
Dakota Johnson stars in the titular role, a mutant who has psychic sensory powers that allow her to predict the future of other superheroes in the universe. Her character in the film is the protégé of the original Madame Web, born Cassandra Webb, in the comic books.
"It was a wild experience," Johnson told Variety of filming Madame Web. "I don't think you can be prepped to go into anything like that, but I learned so much. It is a completely different way of making films."
In the comic books, Web is a blind, elderly woman who suffers from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder that forces her to use a life support system. She guides others rather than risking her own life in conflict.
An official synopsis for the movie implies Madame Web takes place in another universe, separate from the Venom movies, the 2022 supervillain film Morbius and the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man series.
Read on for everything we know about Madame Web so far.
Who is in the Madame Web cast?
Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, a New York City paramedic who begins seeing the future and holds a startling personal connection to a mysterious company of Spider-Man-related characters.
Madame Web marks Johnson's first major franchise since Fifty Shades of Grey. Most recently, she starred in the critically acclaimed The Lost Daughter and Sundance Film Festival Audience Award winner Cha Cha Real Smooth.
Starring opposite Johnson is Sydney Sweeney, who plays Julia Carpenter in Madame Web. Her character later takes on the mantle of Spider-Woman in the comics.
Sweeney's acting credits include lead roles in Euphoria, The White Lotus and National Anthem. In addition to the upcoming Madame Web, the actress stars in the soon-to-be released romantic comedy, Anyone But You.
Joining Johnson and Sweeney in the Madame Web cast are Emma Roberts as Mary Parker, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims and Mike Epps.
What is Madame Web about?
An official synopsis for the movie implies Madame Web takes place in another new universe. "Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines," the synopsis reads. "Forced to confront revelations about her past, [Casandra] forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present."
Who is directing Madame Web?
Longtime television writer S.J. Clarkson cowrote and directed Madame Web. Outside of the anticipated superhero film, the British director is known for her work on 2017's The Defenders, 2006's Life on Mars and 2015's Jessica Jones.
Clarkson's Madame Web feature is part of Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, joining the widely popular animated Spider-Verse trilogy. "But, with her, it's all psychological," Clarkson told Comicbook.com of protagonist Cassandra.
"And I found that incredibly exciting to explore," she added. "Madame Web brings these four superheroes' worlds together. It's the genesis and inception of what will become."
When did Madame Web film?
It was announced that Johnson and Sweeney would costar in the movie back in March 2022. Principle photography commenced that July and filming officially wrapped in January 2023.
Johnson was previously seen filming scenes in Boston during an August 2022 shoot for the movie. The actress was spotted wearing a New York City Fire Department paramedics uniform running towards an overturned vehicle on a highway in a video shared on Twitter.
Is there a trailer for Madame Web?
Sony Pictures released the first official trailer for Madame Web on Nov. 15, giving fans an action-packed preview of what to expect from the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff movie.
In the trailer, set to Billie Eilish's hit song "bury a friend," we meet Johnson's Cassandra Webb as she attempts to protect a trio of teenagers (including Sweeney) from a masked villain who looks suspiciously like Spider-Man. When the villain stabs Cassandra with a knife, she is brought back to the beginning of the encounter.
Cassandra then recounts her life as a paramedic in Manhattan alongside a colleague played by Scott. After a near-death experience on the job, Cassandra confesses to a doctor that she's experiencing visions of the future and begins to encounter both Sweeney's trio of friends and the man trying to kill them, whom she identifies as Ezekiel Sims (Rahim).
The teenagers and Cassandra all realize they are connected to each other and that Ezekiel can see the future himself, as they try to prevent him from destroying a future in which the teens also seem to grow into spider-related superpowers.
When will Madame Web premiere?
Madame Web is slated to premiere on Valentine's Day, swinging into theaters on Feb. 14, 2024.
