Thompson, who plays Benedict, is set to reprise his role in season 4 with Ha acting as his love interest, Sophie Baek. Nicola Coughlan, who stars as Penelope and Luke Newton, who plays love interest Colin Bridgerton, are also set to return, along with Jonathan Bailey, who plays Anthony Bridgerton.

In September 2024, Netflix announced three new additions to the cast: Michelle Mao as Rosamund Li, a "beautiful, vain, and eager" woman who "sets her sights" on Benedict, and Isabella Wei as Posy Li, her sister who is "much kinder." Katie Leung will play their mother, Lady Araminta Gun, who is "feeling the pressure" to get one of her daughters married off.

The streamer also confirmed the return of several cast members, including Ruth Gemmell, Claudia Jessie, Florence Hunt, and Will Tilston, along with Gold Rosheuvel, Polly Walker, and Adjoa Andoh.

Hannah Dodd, who plays Francesca Bridgerton, will also return, along with Victor Alli, who plays her new husband, Lord John Sterling. Masali Baduza, who joined the cast at the end of season 3 in a surprise role, will also return.

Simone Ashley is notably not confirmed to return to the upcoming season, but a source told PEOPLE that she "adores her Bridgerton family and cast and would be happy to come back at any point if storyline allows."

In May 2024, showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed that the script was in the early stages to Refinery29, teasing that they were “in the middle of writing it right now."

Early on, Quinn confirmed to PEOPLE that she knew who would be at the center of the story, but she couldn't share anything at the time. It didn't take long for Netflix to confirm that it would finally be Benedict's turn — just as fans theorized.

Netflix revealed the news in an Instagram post shared in July 2024 that featured clips of Benedict's scenes from the series. The caption said, "welcome to the marriage mart mr. bridgerton. benedict’s story is coming next season."

Another update came in September, when Tudum shared that Sophie and Benedict will cross paths at a masquerade ball that she disguised herself to attend, despite the fact that she's not usually on the Bridgertons' guest list.

"As a victim of tragic events, Sophie has been forced to spend much of her life working for the most demanding employer in the ton. But the resourceful Sophie always finds a way to persevere through her circumstances," Tudum shared.

Since Ha is Korean, the character's name has been changed from what it was in the book, Sophie Beckett, to Sophie Baek.

"To make Sophie's name fit someone who looks like me is really empowering," she said. "It's a really nice way for me to feel like the role is fit for me, rather than me having to fit a certain mold."

Speaking to Tudum the same month, Thompson said that the season will focus on "the struggle between a proper old-school fairy tale — the romance of it — and the actual reality of the world."

He added, “I get really excited by how many unexpected twists you’ll get in Season 4."
