The last episode of Last Man Standing season 8 brought us a lot of cliffhangers. For one, Eve is home and Vanessa has some feelings about that, Jen started her new job at Outdoor Man Grill and her first days were a little rocky, and, hello! Kristin went into labor. Needless to say, fans have been on the edge of their seats to find out what happens next. So naturally, we're all wondering: Will there be a season 9 and if so, when will it air? Here's everything we know:
Will there be a season 9 of Last Man Standing?
Although season 8 was cut one episode short due to COVID-19, and ratings were down, TV Guide reported in May that Fox renewed the show for at least one more season. The show also confirmed the news on Instagram.
On season 8 ending early, Tim Allen told The Wrap: “I think the best analogy is a sports analogy for me. We got right up to bat, we were gonna win the game, it was pretty obvious we were gonna finish the game and everything was gonna be alright. And then we got a thunderstorm and a rain delay and they canceled the game and we never came back.”
When will season 9 air?
Like many shows, Last Man Standing's production schedule has been impacted by the pandemic, and therefore there is not a confirmed date for the season 9 premiere. However, Jonathan Adams, who plays Chuck Larabee, posted on Twitter that the cast was going to begin shooting the new season in early October.
If all goes as planned, that means the show will likely return in 2021. Even if the premiere is delayed, you can expect to see it Thursdays on Fox at 8 p.m. EST.
What will season 9 be about?
Because we lost one episode for season 8, which would technically have been the finale, we'll likely meet the newest member of the Baxter family, learn about Eve's return, and much more in season 9.
Showrunner Kevin Abbott also revealed that the show will touch upon the current pandemic. "With the virus, I’m the one that believes comedy is important in a time like this,” Abbott told The Wrap. “It was Dan Ferguson, a sports writer I love, had a quote that I love which is just, ‘Laughter shrinks troubles down to a size where you can talk about them.’ And to me that means that sometimes things just seem so overwhelming and so huge that you can’t even deal with them, and laughing about them makes them seem not so world-ending. And something like the virus, which is kind of world-ending, I would love to have a chance to deal with that, to see what are the after-effects on our family. ‘Cause I don’t think you can go back to just telling regular old family stories, ’cause the world will have changed and we will change with it. And we will tell stories about it. And I mean this in the most sensitive way I can, that is an interesting thing to do.”
Who in the cast is returning?
While not confirmed, it's safe to say the entire main cast will be back for season 9, including: Allen, Nancy Travis (Vanessa), Amanda Fuller (Kristin), Molly McCook (Mandy), Christoph Sanders (Kyle), Jordan Masterson (Ryan), Adams (Chuck), Hector Elizondo (Ed), and Krista Marie Yu (Jen).
We're also hoping that Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Eve, will be showing up more on the show. "My preference would be, yes to have [Kaitlyn] on more," Allen told TV Guide. "If she's a fighter pilot for the Air Force, we're not sure how much she's allowed to see us. She'd be in Europe. We'd have to schedule it around her flight training. But my guess is, as much as possible, we'd have her on. We love her and we love to honor our military."
