Everton establish contact for Man Utd striker option as record transfer becomes more likely
Everton are among the contenders to bring Tammy Abraham back to the Premier League in the summer, a report has revealed.
Abraham is currently in his second season in Serie A with Roma, which he has found much harder than his first. He has only scored six goals in 24 league appearances this term. In contrast, he managed 17 from 37 at the first attempt.
Due to his downturn in form, he missed out on a place in England’s squad for the World Cup. At the age of 25, he now finds himself at a crossroads in his career.
Indeed, while his popularity in Rome wanes, Abraham might be considering his future. A return to the Premier League could be possible this summer, when Chelsea’s buyback clause will become active.
The Blues are believed to be considering luring Abraham back to west London, despite his downturn in form. After all, they need to find another striker capable of scoring on a regular basis.
Alternatively, TEAMtalk understands he is on Man Utd’s shortlist of centre-forward targets. The Red Devils will need to find a new marksman after the end of Wout Weghorst’s loan spell from Burnley and they could look at Abraham.
But according to i, Abraham is also on Everton’s radar. No team in the Premier League this season has scored fewer goals than the Toffees.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injury issues again, failing to meet the extra requirements placed upon him after the sale of Richarlison in the summer.
Hence, if Everton are to avoid another relegation battle – provided they stay up in the first place – they will be looking for other sources of goals.
Tammy Abraham to cost a huge amount
With that in mind, they might want to make a move for Abraham. To get him, though, they would have to make a bid matching the value of Chelsea’s buyback clause: £67million.
That would be a club-record purchase for Everton, which may be risky after Abraham’s recent form. He has failed to score in any of his most recent five appearances in all competitions.
Regardless, Everton are said to have established contact about the England international already. If Roma decide to cash in during the summer – which is deemed to be more likely than it would have been a couple of months ago – Abraham could end up at Goodison Park.
Alternatively, Aston Villa – one of the clubs Abraham used to play for on loan from Chelsea – are once again mentioned as an interested party.
Their need might not be quite as urgent as Everton’s, but they have not forgotten what Abraham is capable of. If Unai Emery wants to add another striker, the Roma man is someone they could be likely to turn to.
Man Utd may yet be the most powerful suitor for Abraham. The report confirms he is under consideration at Old Trafford, but the same will go for many names.
Abraham is under contract in the Italian capital until 2026. His overall record for the Giallorossi is 34 goals from 86 appearances.
There are still a few months ahead for him to find some better form before the summer transfer window. Perhaps he could put himself in the shop window by shaking off his struggles, though there is plenty of work to do.
