Evacuation alert for Stewart Crossing, Yukon, ends

An evacuation alert issued on June 26 for Stewart Crossing, Yukon, and a stretch of the North Klondike Highway has ended.

The alert — which is not an evacuation order — was issued for the central Yukon community and the area between kilometres 522 and 538 on the highway due to a nearby wildfire.

In a news release Friday afternoon, the Yukon government said the risk "has diminished due to reduced fire weather, rainfall and containment achieved by wildland fire crews."

The search for a woman who is believed to have fallen into a sinkhole in western Pennsylvania has become a recovery effort after two treacherous days of digging through mud and rock produced no signs of life, authorities said Wednesday.
