Adelaide Zoo in South Australia welcomed its first baby black-and-white colobus monkey on Monday, January 30, Zoos SA said.Footage recorded by the zoo shows the unnamed baby and its mother, 12-year-old Adale. The infant is the first black-and-white colobus monkey to be born at Adelaide Zoo and the first born in Australia since 2015, Zoos SA said. The senior keeper of primates at Adelaide Zoo, Pij Olijnyk, said the white-furred baby will eventually look like the other adult monkeys. “Visitors will definitely be able to notice the little one against the troop with a lovely white, wiry fur! The baby will begin to darken at around four weeks old and will have a glossy black coat like the adults at around three to four months,” Olijnyk said.“Black-and-white colobus are threatened in the wild and have been heavily impacted by deforestation, habitat destruction and hunting for their coats and bushmeat,” Olijnyk said. “Here at Adelaide Zoo it is fantastic that we are able to be a part of the conservation of this wonderful species and welcome this little one as an ambassador so our visitors can learn more about these amazing primates.” Credit: Zoos SA via Storyful

A sperm whale that washed up on the Hawaiian island of Kauai was found to have fishing nets, plastic bags, and various traps inside its stomach, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR).The 56-foot whale was examined by researchers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa Health and Stranding Lab, who spent 15 hours investigating the cause of death, the Hawaii DLNR said.“In addition to squid beaks, fish skeletons and other prey remains, we found at least six hagfish traps and we also found significant amounts of at least seven types of fishing net, at least two types of plastic bags, a light protector, fishing line and a float from a net,” Dr Kristi West, director of the Health and Stranding Lab, said. “We did find a number of things in the stomach of the sperm whale that may have contributed to its death and are certainly disturbing.”Researchers believe the manmade debris may have caused a blockage which contributed to the whale’s death.“We are only able to examine a small number of our dolphins and whales that die in our waters, and we think that each individual we are able to examine represents as many of 20 other animals who are likely to ultimately die from these types of impacts,” West said. “It’s heartbreaking to see this kind of destruction in an individual animal.” Credit: Hawaii DLNR via Storyful

STORY: The U.S. and the Philippines on Thursday announced American forces will gain access to four new military bases in the Pacific island nation, expanding a staging ground as Washington seeks to counter China in region.Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in Manila met his Philippine counterpart and hailed the agreement as a significant security measure.“We discussed concrete actions to address destabilising activities in the waters surrounding the Philippines, including the West Philippine Sea. And we remain committed to strengthening our mutual capacities to resist armed attack.”.It comes amid mounting concern over China's increasing assertiveness in the disputed South China Sea and tensions over self-ruled Taiwan.A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry on Thursday countered that America was to blame for rising tensions in region, and said American access to Philippine bases "hurts regional peace and stability."America has been flexing its Pacific military might - last month American f-18 hornets roared off the deck of the the U.S.S. Nimitz as the aircraft carrier navigated through the South China Seas.Austin's visit to the Philippines follows a trip to key ally South Korea. This week American and South Korean forces staged joint military drills featuring heavy bombers and stealth fighters. Those drills provoked a furious condemnation from Pyongyang.North Korea on Thursday said American drill in the region reached an "extreme red-line" and threaten to turn the peninsula into a "huge war arsenal and a more critical war zone."Last year, North Korea conducted a record number of ballistic missile tests, which are banned by U.N. Security Council resolutions. It was also observed reopening its shuttered nuclear weapons test site, raising expectations of a nuclear test for the first time since 2017.Asked about the North Korean warnings, Austin said the U.S. would stand by its ally, Seoul.“We remain committed to our extended deterrence commitment, and we're very serious about that when it comes to the ROK (Republic of Korea). And we will continue to work alongside our allies and train and ensure that we maintain credible and ready forces.”
