SYDNEY (Reuters) -Authorities in Australia aim to toughen up laws on the mishandling of radioactive material as a search for a hazardous capsule that a mining company lost in the Outback enters a seventh day. Officials from Western Australia's emergency response department, defence authorities, radiation specialists and others are combing a 1,400 km (870 mile) stretch of highway for the tiny capsule that was lost in transit more than two weeks ago. The radioactive capsule was part of a gauge used to measure the density of iron ore feed from Rio Tinto's Gudai-Darri mine in the state's remote Kimberley region.

A scuba diver observed a Maori octopus changing color in its natural habitat, captured in footage taken off the coast of Rye in Victoria, Australia, on January 29.In the video, the Maori octopus is seen moving along the ocean floor around a garden of kelp as it camouflages its skin to blend in with its surroundings. According to the Derwent Estuary, the Maori octopus, the largest octopus species found in southern Australia, is known to attack and eat other octopuses. Willeka Cox, the diver who shot the footage, told Storyful she was “lucky to come across” the creature.“It was so impressive and amazing the way he moved and camouflaged,” she said. A strong, shallow earthquake shook a mountainous region in the southeastern Philippines on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries, officials said. The 6.1 magnitude quake, which was triggered by a local fault, struck about 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) northeast of New Bataan town in the coastal province of Davao de Oro at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. Davao de Oro Gov. Dorothy Gonzaga suspended classes and most government work in the province on Thursday to allow inspections of buildings for possible damage.
Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced several new clean energy initiatives in the government's annual federal budget speech on Wednesday, saying “green growth” is a top priority for the country. More than $8 billion dollars were announced for projects like mangrove restoration which help suck carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, converting waste into biogas and speeding up renewable energy initiatives. The minister said the injection of 35,000 crore rupees ($4.3 billion) into India's energy transition will be channeled through the ministry of petroleum and natural gas to help India reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2070.
