Euro 2024: Mattia Zaccagni puts Italy through to knockout round with last-minute equalizer vs. Croatia

The draw helped Italy secure second place in Group B

Italy drew 1-1 with Croatia and secured a place in the knockout round at Euro 2024 thanks to Mattia Zaccagni's goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

The draw clinches second place in Group B for Italy, the defending European champions. It put the Italians ahead of Croatia, who had led the match since Luka Modrić's 55th-minute goal.

With the Italians pressing for a vital equalizer, Riccardo Calafiori's pass split the Croatia defense and found Zaccagni, who curled his shot past goalkeeper Dominik Livaković.

Croatia had eyes on jumping over Italy and into second place in the group following Modrić's goal, which finished off a wild one-minute sequence in the match.

Italy's Davide Frattesi was called for a handball in his own penalty box, which was confirmed following a VAR review. Up stepped Modrić, who tried to go to the bottom right corner, but instead saw his attempt denied by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Croatia retained possession, and Luka Sučić's cross into the Italian box was flicked on goal by Ante Budimir. That attempt was saved by Donnarumma, but Modrić was on the spot to put home the rebound.

The goal made Modrić the oldest player to ever score at the Euros at 38 years and 289 days old.

Ivica Vastić, who played for Austria from 1996-2008, was the previous record holder at 38 years and 257 days old when he scored against Poland at Euro 2008.

Spain's 1-0 win over Albania earned them the group title, with Italy finishing second.

Croatia's only hope of advancing is if England defeats Slovenia by at least three goals in their final Group C match on Tuesday. That would put Croatia among the top four third-place finishers in the tournament and into the knockout round.

I think that is the main thing that pulls us together."First invented in Finland more than a decade ago, hobby horsing has taken off at a gallop across the globe. "It is growing every year," said Julia Mikkonen, the chair of the Finnish hobby horse association.This year's championship was "the biggest we have had so far", she added.Beyond the whimsy, great strength and skill is required to jump the obstacles while holding the hobby horse. Some top competitors could give elite hurdlers or gymnasts a run for their money."If you jump over obstacles your hip mobility has to be absolutely insane," said Mikkonen, 20, with some fences up to 110 centimetres (3.6 feet) tall. - 10,000 enthusiasts -"Of course we are all dreaming of having a world championship one day," said Mikkonen, who estimates there are around 10,000 hobby horsers globally."I am still a bit breathless but I am happy with my performance", said 19-year-old Jojo Hanninen as she sat down after her dressage event. To succeed in the sport you have to channel your inner centaur, she said."In hobby horsing, my legs are the horse... I am both horse and human," she said. Hanninen's hobby horse is a grey called Toope, with glittery reins and pink ribbons adorning its white mane.- Welcoming community -Competitors go to great lengths with their horses -- which are also exhibited and judged -- modelling and sewing the heads and adorning them with decorations.  "Hobby horses are art," said Arlin, who makes her own.With the cheers of the crowd still ringing in her ears after an impressive show jumping round, she hailed the sport as "the best hobby ever"."You are doing so many things with your hands, brain and the whole body."Like many of her peers, Arlin found hobby horsing through play as a child. "But the older I became, it became more serious," said the rider, who trains by riding real horses, working out in the gym and doing pole dancing.Rainbow flags in the arena reflected the tolerant values underpinning the community.   "Horses are mostly seen as a girls' sport, but that is not correct.
