EU chief von der Leyen and Pope discuss Ukraine

STORY: After the meeting von der Leyen posted a photograph of the two meeting, writing: “We stand with those suffering from the destruction in Ukraine. This war must end, bringing peace back to Europe.”

The EU chief also met Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The Vatican said the two also discussed the war in Ukraine, focusing on the humanitarian consequences and effect on food supplies globally.

Shortly after the meeting with von der Leyen, the Vatican announced the Pope's July 2-7 trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan had been indefinitely postponed because of the 85-year-old pontiff's knee ailment.
