The policy change, which also restricts foreign investment in a sector that had become essential to success in Chinese school exams, was contained in a government document widely circulated on Friday and verified by sources. The move threatens to decimate China's $120 billion private tutoring industry and triggered a heavy selloff in shares of tutoring firms traded in Hong Kong and New York including New Oriental Education & Technology Group and Koolearn Technology Holding Ltd.

For the U.S. women’s volleyball team, the road to this Olympics and a quest for the country’s first gold medal in the sport began in the hours after a frustrating semifinal loss to Serbia in the Olympics five years ago. An inspiring letter from beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings about the importance of rebounding from a heartbreaking loss helped the U.S. women claim the bronze medal and give them something to build on for the next Olympic Games. The women’s team made it back for another shot this year and begins the journey for that elusive gold medal in its first pool play match on Sunday against Argentina.

As the Delta variant of the coronavirus sweeps the country, the U.S. is buying more vaccines. Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech, said Friday the government bought 200 million additional doses of their COVID-19 vaccine. That’ll expand the total U.S. order of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines to half a billion. 40% of that has already been delivered. All this comes amid a debate over whether or not Americans will need a booster dose come fall. The deal gives the government the option to buy an updated version of the vaccine targeting new variants of the virus. Earlier this month, Pfizer said it and BioNTech plan to ask U.S. and European regulators to authorize a booster dose. But the U.S. says fully vaccinated Americans don’t need a third shot at this time. The latest U.S. deal comes atop the 200 million additional doses the government bought from Moderna last month.

A dispute over blood tests has raised questions about an Italian study that suggested the coronavirus was circulating outside China much earlier than expected, highlighting the challenges of trying to determine when the virus emerged. Scientists in Italy last year published a study that showed neutralising antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus were found in blood taken from healthy volunteers in the country in October 2019 during a lung cancer screening trial. COVID-19 was first identified in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, while Italy's first patient was detected on Feb. 21 last year in a small town near Milan.
