Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas Day chanting at UNESCO sunken churches in Lalibela
Pilgrims chanted as they celebrated Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas day on Friday 7 January at the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia. The UNESCO-listed churches are sunk into the ground, carved out of rock. Thousands of pilgrims came to the town to celebrate Genna, Ethiopia's Christmas Day, despite the fact that it was only recaptured by the government from rebel forces a few weeks ago. Ethiopia is currently in a state of civil war. The Church of Saint George, shown in the video, is one of eleven rock-hewn monolithic churches in Lalibela.
