Escaped Alabama inmate planned shootout: police

STORY: The Alabama inmate who was arrested on Monday following an 11-day manhunt - told authorities that he had planned to engage in a shootout with law enforcement, according to police.

Thirty-eight year-old Casey White was broken out of prison by a former corrections officer Vicky White last month.

The search ended with a crash in Indiana, according to Sheriff Dave Wedding of Vanderburgh County.

‘The members of the US Task Force basically rammed the vehicle and pushed it into a ditch and we later found out had they not done that, the fugitive was going to engage in a shootout with law enforcement.”

“And we have photos of the weapons that were located in the vehicle. There were at least four handguns, semi-automatics, nine millimeters. And this is known as AR 15, which shoots 223 caliber round.”

Police say the capture began when an officer noticed the Cadillac that Casey White and the corrections officer, 56-year-old Vicki White, were thought to be driving – parked outside a hotel in Indiana.

Casey and Vicky are not related. Authorities say Vicky suffered an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, before she was taken to a hospital and later died.

Officials said arrangements have been made for Casey to be transported back to Alabama to be arraigned on new charges.

He was previously accused of a September 2020 stabbing death and was serving time for crimes committed in 2015.

Alabama police say he now also faces an escape charge. Vicky White was a 17-year corrections veteran and near retirement.

Officials have said she and Casey had a “special relationship” for at least two years and communicated over the phone.
