Having major Home Town withdrawal symptoms? Same. Since the season four finale aired back in June (and Erin Napier's incredibly heartwarming tribute following the last episode) we've been missing our favorite Laurel, Mississippi, couple. Fortunately, a season five is in the works and Erin just revealed when we can expect to see these new episodes on TV.
While she did not give a specific date, we can probably narrow the premiere date down to one of four days: January 4, January 11, January 18, or January 25. HGTV has always aired Home Town on Monday nights, so there's a good chance the network will continue that routine.
What's unique about this season in particular is that it was filmed entirely during the pandemic. Back in June, Erin and Ben Napier spoke with Heath Racela, a former senior producer and director of PBS's This Old House and Ask This Old House, on his podcast Quarantine Creatives with Heath Racela. The couple outlined how season five production (which started on June 29) would go.
Erin explained that the cast and crew were going to follow extreme precautions. For example, everyone would be required to wear masks except for her and Ben while on camera. Also, the show would not be referencing or drawing attention to the pandemic.
To Ben's dismay, crew lunches would be cancelled and everyone would be on their own. "I’m a very social guy, so this has been very hard for me already," Ben told Racela. Erin also explained that they would have to work with their casting producer over Zoom, as she returned home to Canada and wasn't allowed back in the country.
Sounds like some pretty big adjustments! However, if anyone can make good television during a public health crisis (and also continue to run their businesses Laurel Mercantile and Scotsman General Store & Woodshop), it's Erin and Ben. We're definitely excited to see how this season pans out come January. In the meantime, you can checkout these cozy fall candles Erin just launched at Laurel Mercantile.
