Environmental protesters protect century-old tree from London property developers

Two environmental protesters prepared to spend the night in a 100-year-old poplar tree at risk of being felled in Battersea, southwest London on February 22. The tree stands in York Gardens and is one of over 100 mature trees -- two-thirds of the total number expected to be removed as part of a housing estate regeneration project. The estate faces a major London road where the trees act as a barrier to noise and traffic pollution. The developer's proposed new green open space planted with saplings will take many decades to come to full maturity.
