Enthusiasts celebrate 20 years of yoga in Times Square

STORY: This year, the event celebrated its 20th anniversary.

It started on June 21, 2003, with three people doing yoga at sunrise in Times Square.

Two of them co-founded 'Solstice in Times Square: Mind over Madness Yoga' that now organizes the sessions every year.

The event continued during the pandemic, streaming classes live in empty Times Square 2020 and at reduced capacity and socially distanced in 2021.

On Tuesday, yogis participated in seven free yoga classes that went from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., from sun rise to sun set.

"I came all the way up from South Carolina to do this," said Cathy Cirian, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, resident. "I'm a 75 year old (yoga) instructor, and I just believe that if you can practice yoga and find peace in Times Square, that's what it's all about."

Seven thousand people registered to participate in the event, organizers said.
