Year in Review 2020: Yahoo Malaysia readers’ most searched Malaysian female personalities

2020 sees readers searching up female personalities from local actresses to Hollywood stars, from good news to royal gossips. Ranging from local celebrities to British monarchy and Kim Kardashian, here are Yahoo Malaysia readers’ top ten most searched Malaysian female personalities of 2020.

10. Nora Danish

Malaysian celebrity Nora Danish spent an eventful period during the Malaysian Movement Control Order (MCO) by uploading TikTok videos of her dancing, garnering over 3.6 million likes. With more than 830,000 followers on her official TikTok account, Danish had roped in her son, friends, and staff to join her in the videos.

9. Son Ye-jin

South Korean actress Son Ye-jin was reunited with actor Hyun Bin in the hit romance Korean drama, Crash Landing on You. The drama was the third highest-rated South Korean TV drama in cable television history.

Son took home the Most Popular Actress (TV) in the 56th Baeksang Arts Award, South Korea’s equivalent to the Oscars, and will be making her Hollywood debut in the upcoming movie, The Cross, soon.

8. Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, is the wife to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. Taking a different route to the royal family’s “never complain, never explain” playbook, she has an ongoing legal battle with Tatler’s publication since May 2020.

Tatler had alleged that the Duchess was upset about her workload following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit.

The Duchess, alongside the Duke and their children, had also delivered food parcels to local isolated pensioners during the COVID-19 pandemic in May and June 2020.

7. Kim Kardashian

One of the most controversial personalities, Kim Kardashian, drew ire from the general public when she revealed that she had flown her inner circle to a private island amid the COVID-19 pandemic to celebrate her 40th birthday.

Kardashian had also taken the brunt of husband Kanye West’s erratic Presidential run where he had spoke about the couple’s personal life without Kim’s consent at rallies.

6. Angelina Jolie

American actress and humanitarian, Angelina Jolie, is currently in a four-year custody battle with ex-husband Brad Pitt. A tabloid had recently alleged that Jolie has footage of Pitt “drunk or yelling at the kids” and will use them in court.

In her role as UNHCR Special Envoy, Jolie had delivered a powerful speech at the 2nd International Conference on Action with Women and Peace in November, highlighting the plight of many abused and murdered women for claiming their rights.

5. Neelofa

In October 2020, Malaysian actress and entrepreneur Neelofa announced that she has decided to wear the niqab on her Instagram. Erasing more than 4,000 photos of her without the veil on her Instagram, Neelofa confirmed that she would be donning the niqab in subsequent episodes of her talk shows, as well as other public appearances.

4. Nourul Wahab Depp

Malaysian singer Nourul Wahab Depp took to Instagram in June to call out a rude airport staff who had raised his voice at her and her parents-in-law. According to KLIA’s rules, the passenger is only allowed one other person to accompany them.

As her in-laws could not speak Bahasa Malaysia or English well, she had accompanied them when an officer on duty shouted at them despite her explanations. In a later Instagram post, the singer thanked the other airport staff who had helped escorted her in-laws to the departure hall.

3. Zizie Ezette

The corruption trial for Zizie Ezette and husband, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin continues into 2020. Her husband had pleaded not guilty to three charges of receiving bribes totalling RM2.8 million, and Ezette had also pleaded not guilty to the three counts of abetting with her husband on the same issues.

2. Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, announced that she and her husband, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will be stepping down from their role as senior members of the royal family. Since June, the couple is living in California after a short stay in Canada.

In an extraordinarily move by a member of the royal family, Markle had also revealed a miscarriage in a New York Times article in November. The opinion piece is applauded by many for kickstarting difficult conversations about miscarriages.

1. Vivy Yusof

Sitting at #1 on the most searched Malaysian female personalities amongst Yahoo Malaysia’s readers is Malaysian entrepreneur and co-founder of FashionValet and The dUCk Group, Vivy Yusof.

Yusof and husband, Fadzaruddin Shah Anuar, had launched three fundraisers to help Malaysia’s frontline workers in their fight during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising over RM2 million for the cause. It became one of the country's biggest fundraisers, prompting them to start a support fund 2.0. The couple also started the FV Bazaar initiative during the pandemic to provide a platform for home food sellers to promote their businesses.
