The New England Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy, Massachusetts, began caring for 64 stranded sea turtles suffering from life-threatening medical conditions on Tuesday, January 17.
The turtles were found stranded on Cape Cod beaches, the hospital said.
All sea turtles in the United States are considered threatened or endangered, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The aquarium said, “Each year, hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles wash up on the beaches of Cape Cod. Because of the rapidly changing water temperature and wind pattern, many turtles cannot escape the hook-like area of Cape Cod Bay before becoming hypothermic.”
The New England Aquarium said that the staff decided to “playfully” name this batch of patients after “pasta shapes, with Fusilli, Orzo, and Lasagna among the group.”
