Emmy nominations 2024: Shogun, The Bear and Baby Reindeer among top nominees

The biggest TV awards ceremony of the year – the Emmys – has announced its latest round of nominations.

On Wednesday (17 July), at 11.30am ET/16.30pm BST, Veep star Tony Hale and Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph revealed the TV shows and stars in contention for this year’s trophies.

The 2024 ceremony will be held on September 15 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. It arrives just months after the delayed 2023 Emmy Awards were broadcast in early January due to last year’s actors’ and writers’ strikes.

Shōgun led the nominations with a whopping 25 nods. The Bear followed closely behind with 23 nominations while Richard Gadd’s Netflix hit, Baby Reindeer, shrugged off controversy to secure 11 nominations.

First-time nominees included Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building and Jonathan Bailey for Fellow Travelers. Meanwhile, Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis made history as the first Indigenous women to be nominated for acting at the Emmys.

Shows eligible for the Primetime Emmys must have been broadcast in the US between 1 June 2023 and 31 May 2024, with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences choosing the nominees.

Kali Reis joins Lily Gladstone as the first Indigenous women to be nominated for acting at the Emmys.

Earlier this year, the former world champion boxer and breakout star of True Detective: Night Country told us about how the new season flips gender dynamics, the importance of telling Indigenous stories, and why misogynistic “bros” need to stop sabotaging the show’s critical score.

The true story behind Shogun

Wednesday 17 July 2024 15:00 , Inga Parkel

With Succession no longer in the running, the field for drama is wide open, giving Fx’s historical drama Shogun a possible path to victory.

For those who don’t know the true story of William Adams, the inspiration behind the adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, you’ll want to read on because it’s an epic tale – just as, if not more, epic as the show itself.

Shogun: How an Englishman from Kent made an extraordinary journey to become the first Western samurai

The new FX/Disney+ series, adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel, is a sprawling historical epic. As Kevin E G Perry writes, both the book and show take inspiration from the remarkable true story of William Adams, the first Englishman to set foot in Japan

Best Drama predictions

Wednesday 17 July 2024 14:30 , Jacob Stolworthy

This year’s TV contenders in the Drama category include Shogun, Fallout, The Gilded Age and Mr and Mrs Smith.

Actors from the above that seem likely to be bominated include Shogun stars Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanda, Fallout’s Walton Goggins and Carrie Coon in The Gilded Age.

An outside bet that deserves a nod is The Curse, Nathan Fielder’s existential dramedy featuring a standout performance from Emma Stone that features one of the most memorable shots from the last decade of TV.

What will be nominated?

Wednesday 17 July 2024 13:38 , Jacob Stolworthy

Shows eligible for the Primetime Emmys must have been broadcast in the US between 1 June 2023 and 31 May 2024, with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences choosing the nominees.

This means that The Bear will be in the running for its stellar second season – but not its divisive third. And shows like The Crown will still be nominated despite concluding some time ago.

Hello, and welcome to this year’s Independent live blog running through the latest round of Emmy nominations!

It’s worth noting that, if you’re one of many thinking, “Wait, didn’t the Emmys already hold a ceremony this year?”, you’re not wrong: it was delayed from September 2023 to January 2024 due to the actors’ and writers’ strike that rocked Hollywood last year.

Technically, the ceremony that aired in January was the 2023 Emmys – and today’s nominations are for the 2024 Emmys.
