Emma Stone is clearing the air on what name she likes to be called.

During an appearance on TODAY on Thursday, June 20, the Easy A alum clarified some questions about her name, after she revealed in May that she usually goes by "Emily" rather than "Emma" off-camera.

As Stone, 35, and her costar Jesse Plemons prepared to talk about their latest movie Kinds of Kindness, TODAY host Craig Melvin, 45, asked a clarifying question about what to call the actress.

"Are we still going by Emma, or Emily?" Melvin asked. "There's been some confusion over your name."

"I'm fine either way," Stone replied. "I really am. My real name is Emily, though."

"Why have you been allowing us to call you Emma for all these years?" the host asked.

"It was taken at Screen Actors Guild," she said. "It's sort of like when you register a business and you can't have the same name as someone else."

"I've been saying Emily my whole life ... you can call me whatever you want," she added. "You can make up a name!"

Just a few weeks ago, while Stone made an appearance at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to promote Kinds of Kindness — an upcoming dark comedy-thriller directed by her longtime friend and collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos — a reporter referred to her by her birth name of Emily.

After being referred to by her birth name, Stone smiled and turned to Lanthimos, excitedly telling him, "That's my name!"

Back in April, Stone also revealed in an interview with Hollywood Reporter  that she changed her real name professionally to Emma at the beginning of her acting career because another actress was already going by Emily Stone.

When asked if anyone in her life ever refers to her by her birth name, Stone explained, "When I get to know them, people that I work with do."

"It’s just because my name was taken [by another actress in SAG]. Then I freaked out a couple of years ago," she continued. "For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.'"

Kinds of Kindness is Stone's fifth movie with Lanthimos; it marks the pair's first movie together since the actress took home the Oscar for Best Actress in 2023's Poor Things.

Elsewhere in her interview with TODAY, Stone discussed an already infamous scene from Kinds of Kindness, in which her character breaks out into dance as funky electronic music plays in the background.

"It just came from my heart and soul," she joked about the scene. "During Poor Things, I would kind of dance in between takes and things. This one was something that Yorgos saw me do, and he was like, 'We should just recreate this for Kinds of Kindness. So just make it up as you go.'"

Kinds of Kindness hits theaters on June 21.
