Emily Henry’s Romantic Novel “Funny Story” to Get Movie Adaptation

The news comes shortly after Jennifer Lopez confirmed that her production company is working on a series adaptation of the author's 2023 novel 'Happy Place'

Emily Henry has a funny story for you, and soon you can see it on the big screen!

On Tuesday, July 9, it was announced that the #1 New York Times bestseller will be adapting her hit romance novel Funny Story for the big screen.

According to a press release, Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company are set to produce with Henry writing the script. The film does not yet have a director.

The book was released on April 23, 2024 and follows children’s librarian Daphne as she plots to rekindle her love with her ex-fiancé Peter, who left her for his childhood best friend Petra.

"Stranded in her ex’s lakeside hometown, Daphne becomes roommates with Petra’s ex, Miles, and despite their differences, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan to get back at — or with — their exes," the synopsis reads.

Henry shared the news of the adaptation in an Instagram post. "Full details in the grocery list ❤️‍🔥 also just read there’s gonna be a Shrek 5, so a big day all around. Xoxo," she wrote in the caption while sharing a screenshot of a news article.

Funny Story has sold over 800,000 copies in North America with the author's total sales across her nine novels reaching over 7.5 million in North America, per the press release.

The news comes shortly after Jennifer Lopez confirmed that her production company Nuyorican is working with Netflix on a series adaptation of Henry's 2023 novel Happy Place.

Last month, the singer shared a screenshot of an article announcing the news with a sticker that read, "Can't wait!"

Adaptations of Henry's novels People We Meet on Vacation and Beach Read are already in the works. The bestseller has also written Book Lovers, When the Sky Fell on Splendor and A Million Junes.

Earlier this year, Henry shared her favorite romance novels exclusively with PEOPLE. "There’s just something about a good love story. For me, nothing beats it. The experience of falling in love is so all-consuming, so visceral and the best kind of reading feels much the same," she said.

"The rest of the world just falls away. The book becomes your reality for a while, and through it, you can learn and grow and change, as if the characters’ experiences were your own. Love stories, I believe, have so much to teach us. Plus they’re just plain fun," Henry continued.

Among her favorites are Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan and One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston.
