Elliot Page Returns to Big Screen with Emotional Performance in “Close to You”: See the Trailer (Exclusive)

'Close to You' is in theaters Aug. 16

Elliot Page is at the center of an emotional new film.

PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for Close to You, which stars Oscar-nominee Page, 37, and is written and directed by Dominic Savage.

Close to You, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, is a "drama about love, family and identity that looks at the challenges of returning home when you have changed and feel like an outsider," according to a press release.

The film follows Page's character Sam, who hasn't been home to visit his parents or siblings since his transition. "After four years in Toronto, he takes a long-dreaded trip back to his hometown for his father’s birthday," reads a synopsis.

Once there, Sam "confronts unresolved wounds and reconnects with an old flame," the synopsis adds.

Page told PEOPLE in September 2023 that he felt "grateful and nervous and excited, as one usually does before a premiere," as he debuted Close to You, his first movie role since 2017.

"This was a complete highlight of my career, personally," he said of the movie, which is mostly unscripted and improvised by the cast.

Added the star, "[Dominic's] process, the experience of making a film in this way is not something I’ve done before." The Umbrella Academy actor added, "I feel grateful to be a part of his work and hope to do it again."

Page also told Entertainment Weekly at the time that Close to You was a "liberating" experience three years after he came out as transgender.

"The way I get to feel working now is far more embodied coming from that foundation, versus entering and not feeling that way. It's a huge shift," explained the Pageboy author. "Doing something like this, complete improv, before, would've been close to impossible."

The film, from Greenwich Entertainment, also stars Hillary Baack. Producers include Page, Krishnendu Majumdar, Richard Yee, Daniel Bekerman, Chris Yurkovich and Dominic Savage, with executive producers Anita Gou, Sam Intili, Nia Vazirani, Francine Maisler, Matt Jordan Smith and Andrew Frank.

Close to You is in theaters Aug. 16.
