ELDERLY MAN MISSING, FEARED ATTACKED BY CROCODILE

SARIKEI, March 19 (Bernama) -- An elderly man who went missing is believed to have been attacked by a crocodile while looking for nipah palm shoots near here today.

Sarikei Fire and Rescue station chief Mahmudin Narudin said the man, Lingai Rabong, 78, from Rumah Abak, a longhouse in Sungai Mekam, Sare here was said to have left  his house at 7.30 am.

The victim was discovered missing at 9 am soon after a villager claimed seeing a crocodile emerging from the river with a body believed to be Lingai, in its jaws.

Following a distress call at 12.20pm, four personnel together with a rescue boat were deployed to the scene to mount a search operation with the assistance of the police and villagers.

“We started a water surface search which covered a three-kilometre radius from where the victim was last scene,” he said.
