When shopping for a new deodorant, you might be solely focused on the sweat factor. But Greg Laptevsky, founder of the sustainable deodorant brand Myro, says there are two more things to keep in mind: “It’s important to look for better-for-you ingredients, plus scents you’re really into (as you wear deodorant every day!).” This goes further than just opting out of aluminum and parabens—two hot-button ingredients in bodycare. “As far as specifically shopping for a ‘natural’ or ‘clean’ deodorant, it’s a good idea to steer clear of baking-soda-based formulas as they’re known to cause irritation,” Laptevsky adds.
Sweating (Even While Wearing Deodorant) Is Normal
PSA: You don’t need to throw out your brand-new deodorant just because you’re a little sweaty. “Sweating is definitely normal,” says Laptevsky. This is particularly true if you’re not using aluminum-based products that “actually block your pores, which prevents your body from sweating like it’s supposed to,” he says. For those swapping from traditional antiperspirants to more natural deodorants, the “detox period” might even last a whole month. “After that, you should find that the excess sweating subsides,” explains Laptevsky. “Like all good things, it just takes a little time.”
Below, all-star deodorants that definitely fall into the "good things" category.
