Eddie Murphy is headed back to Shrek's swamp — times two!

In an interview with Collider surrounding his new movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the actor revealed that not only is Shrek 5 well underway, but his character Donkey is getting his own spinoff film.

"We started doing Shrek [5] four or five months ago," said Murphy, 61. "I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it up."

"Another Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie," he went on, noting that he is not recording for the two films at the same time.

"I think [Shrek 5 is] coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next," Murphy added.

The Shrek franchise, which kicked off in 2001, spans four feature-length standalone films as well as two spinoff movies focused on Antonio Banderas' popular Puss in Boots character. The latest film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, was released in 2022.

Shrek follows the titular swamp-dwelling ogre (Mike Myers) in a fairytale setting as he comes face to face with friends and foes, finds love with the fierce Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and goes on many a journey — most notably, in finding and embracing his true self.

Speaking with Variety back in April 2023, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said that he and DreamWorks Animation intended to revive the Shrek franchise and develop Shrek 5 with original voice actors Murphy, Myers, 61, and Diaz, 51.

"Every indication that we've gotten is there's tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return," said Meledandri, 65.
