After a cryptic Instagram post over the weekend that sent fans into meltdown, Ed Sheeran has officially released a surprise track called 'Afterglow'. It's almost as if he knew we'd all be craving an early Christmas present.

The 'Shape of You' singer took to Instagram yesterday - in his first post since announcing the birth of his child with Cherry Seaborn - to promise fans a surprise "Christmas present." He posted a picture of what we now know is his own artwork to accompany the announcement.

As promised, Ed then posted a clip of his new song to Instagram earlier this morning. He captioned the vid, "Hey guys. Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you.

"It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy ! Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s. Back to dad land for me now, ciao x"

Despite taking a well-earned break from his music commitments to focus on being a dad to Lyra Antartica, the Suffolk-born star was recently unveiled as the most-streamed British artist of 2020. I mean, that's pretty impressive, right?

You can stream 'Afterglow' on Spotify, Apple Music and more.
