KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — A 76-year-old Ecuadorian woman, who woke up during her wake last week, has died after seven days in intensive care.

Bella Montoya died from an ischemic stroke, The Guardian reported quoting a statement from Ecuador’s health ministry.

Her son Gilberto Barbera Montoya said he has yet to receive any report from the authorities on the medical explanation of what happened that saw his mother waking up and knocking while inside her coffin.

He also warned that things “are not going to stay like this”, noting that an aunt had formally complained about the incident, seeking to identify the doctor who declared his mother dead initially.

Authorities, however, have set up a committee to review how the hospital issues death certificates.

It was previously reported that Bella, a retired nurse, woke up on June 9 after spending five hours inside her coffin at a funeral home in Babahoyo, about 208 kilometres south-west of Quito.

Her body is now back at the same funeral home where she woke up and would be buried at a public cemetery.
