Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson wants moviegoers to sing in theaters: 'That's the fun part'
"You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you've gone into a musical, and you’re into it. Sing," the "Moana 2" star says.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is weighing in on the recent discourse surrounding singing in theaters during musical movies — and the Moana 2 star tells fans to "sing!"
While walking the red carpet at the Moana 2 U.K. premiere, Johnson told BBC News that he thinks moviegoers should be able to sing if they want to. "You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you've gone into a musical, and you’re into it. Sing," he said. "Especially if you love music, that's the fun part."
Johnson, who reprises his Moana character, the demigod Maui, in the new animated movie musical sequel, is sharing his opinion hot on the heels of recent controversy surrounding the opening of the Wicked movie adaptation and AMC, the world's largest theater chain, telling patrons that singing isn't allowed in theaters.
The company went viral for posting signs advising against singing along during Wicked showings. "To our guests seeing Wicked, we ask that you allow everyone to enjoy the cinema experience," the signs said. "Please refrain from singing during the show."
A Wicked-themed ad also plays before the movie that says, "At AMC Theaters, silence is golden. No talking. No texting. No singing. No wailing. No flirting. And absolutely no name-calling. Enjoy the magic of movies."

To combat the strict no-singing rules, around 1,000 theaters throughout the country are set to host "interactive showings" of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s big screen Wicked adaptation beginning on Dec. 25 for those who wish who sing along to the musical, Variety reported earlier this week.
The topic of whether singing should be allowed in theaters isn't new. Last October, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film debuted in theaters and people shared videos on social media of showings full of fans singing along, shining their phone flashlights, and dancing in the aisles. As a result, many posts went viral with complaints about movie theater etiquette. However, Taylor Swift herself wrote on Instagram, "Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged."
AMC Theatres also released a statement at the time regarding Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie that said, "We encourage dancing and singing throughout this concert film event, but please do not dance on our seats or block other guests from viewing, safely walking or exiting the auditorium."
