Norwegian developer Funcom held a 25-minute Dune: Awakening Direct direct showcase to update the public on its progress on the survival title. Along with a featurette focused on adapting the game from the Dune original book, developers shared the first gameplay trailer for Dune: Awakening.

The official title for the trailer is Dune: Awakening Survive Arrakis, which is fitting given the multitidue of challenges players will encounter on the desert planet. The opening few seconds show a man succumbing to the heat and collapsing on the sand.

It also gives a look at the extreme level of detail in the world, courtesy of Unreal Engine 5. Players roam orange caves and run across the sand dunes as a massive sandworm emerges from the ground.

They’ll have to fight the sandworm – which according to Funcom, can’t actually ever be killed but can be lured to one’s enemies – and many more foes. Beyond combat, players will also be tasked with gathering supplies and resources to survive on the open world of Arrakis. Dune: Awakening is an MMO, so it’s possible players will be able to enlist the help of their friends, though the gameplay trailer didn’t focus on the multiplayer element of the title.

Dune: Awakening will be available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. An official release date for the title hasn’t been revealed yet. In the meantime, Dune fans can head to theaters to watch Dune 2 now.
