Dropout Sets Drag Queen Monét X Change-Hosted Variety Series ‘Monét’s Slumber Party’ With ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse’ Twist (EXCLUSIVE)
“Dungeons and Drag Queens” star Monét X Change has landed her own variety talk series at “Dimension 20” streamer Dropout.
Titled “Monét’s Slumber Party,” the show is described as an “edgy, playful and queer variety show” where “Monét X Change will welcome friends, comedians and other celebrities to an adult sleepover.”
More from Variety
“Combining honest conversation with a little mischief, ‘Monét’s Slumber Party’ will tackle taboo subjects like sex, dating and relationships with openness and humor,” per Dropout.
Think “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse,” because that’s the show entertainment company formerly known as CollegeHumor invoked in the variety series’ concept details: “The set comes to life with in-universe characters (cameos, puppets) who transition us to new segments, do interstitial bits, commentate on what’s happening, and serve as general helpers and friends in Monét’s world.” The recurring characters part of this season include Priscilla Davies, Jonathan Kidder and Kevin McDonald.
Alongside the “Playhouse” element, “Monét’s Slumber Party” will bring Monét together with four guests for games, storytelling, how-to-segments and more.
Guests on the first season of “Monét’s Slumber Party” include the usual Dropout suspects (CEO Sam Reich and talent Brennan Lee Mulligan, Isabella Roland, Grant O’Brien, Oscar Montoya, among others) in addition to celebrities Adam Rippon, Rachel Bloom and Joel Kim Booster; drag queens like Kim Chi, Naomi Smalls, Jujubee, Alaska Thunderfuck, Bob the Drag Queen, Meatball and Persephone Valentine; and comedians like Atsuko Okatsuka and Roz Hernandez.
The first of episode of the show’s six-episode Season 1 will debut July 19 on Dropout. New episodes will launch every other Friday.
“Audiences can expect to see me in my bag!” Monét told Variety. “‘Monét’s Slumber Party’ brings together the worlds of Peewee’s Playhouse meets ‘The Graham Norton Show,’ meets drag, meets fantasy, meets laughter. It’s at this intersection where I feel like I live and thrive the most. I’m so excited about this show and I can’t wait for audiences to come play with me.”
This is not Monét’s first time hosting a talk show, as she previously led “X Change Rate,” which has since concluded. Now, she’s ready to get back at it.
“When I hosted my first talk show X Change Rate, it was a huge moment in my life, so I’ve felt this hole since it ended,” Monét said. “‘Slumber Party’ has filled that hole and brings me back to the talk show chair in a whole new way that’s truly exhilarating. With this show, I get to utilize all of what I do from stand-up comedy to singing, and the thing I love most, which is talk to people and make them laugh. ‘Monét’s Slumber Party’ was a dream to film and I got to play with so many of my friends, new ones, and old.”
Monét X Change’s show marks the first variety talk series on indie streamer Dropout, which debuted in 2018 and is best known for its originals including “Game Changer,” “Dimension 20” (on which Monét X Change appeared for the “Dungeons and Drag Queens” season), “Make Some Noise” and “Um, Actually…,” among others. Recently, Dropout has been expanding its programming slate (and subscriber count) while also pushing its existing titles in an FYC campaign for this year’s Emmys.
