Drone Footage Traces La Palma Lava Flow to Ocean

A new vent emerged on La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano on Friday, October 15, releasing gas and other material, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute reported.

A cloud with ash from the ongoing eruption reduced visibility on Saturday, El Pais reported. The recent activity also cast a sulfurous odor over parts of the island. Flights at La Palma’s airport were cancelled due to conditions.

This footage, filmed on Friday and released by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, shows lava flows on the island, which have reached the ocean. A thermal camera inset shows heat levels in the flows. Credit: IGME via Storyful
