Drone Footage Shows Tear Gas Splitting Crowds During Hong Kong New Year's Day Protest

Drone video captured during Hong Kong’s New Year’s Day protest shows a bird’s-eye view of tear gas causing a crowd to break apart.

This footage, filmed by local reporting group Studio Incendo, shows Hennessy Road in the city’s Wan Chai district. Thousands of protesters marched down the road in a rally organized by the Civil Human Rights Front. The event had initially been approved by authorities, but police later rescinded permission after an HSBC bank branch was vandalized, the South China Morning Post reported.

Police said protesters “set barricades, threw bricks, debris and petrol bombs, started street fires, and vandalized multiple banks and shops” along the route of the march. Credit: Studio Incendo via Storyful
