Drone footage shows Arctic glaciers melting
A call to action on melting glaciers
Location: Svalbard, Norway
Greenpeace campaigners projected a video
on a remote glacier deep into the Arctic circle
showing young climate activists
calling on global heads of state
to step up and take climate change seriously
and join the "Wake Up Call" webinar
which will be live-streamed on the morning
of the UN biodiversity summit in New York
(SOUNDBITE) (English) LECTURER IN ECOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER, KIRSTIN THOMPSON, SAYING:
"There's a carving glacier behind, blocks of ice are coming off it so there's ice floating around and we can sort of hear these sort of popping crackling noises, and that's the air bubbles being released from the ice as it melts, which is quite a sad sound really, because we know this happens normally and naturally anyway but we also know that glaciers like this are receding at a really unprecedented rapid rate."
